Columbus Day Foods

Well, Columbus real name was Cristoforo Colombo in Italian , he married a Portuguese Princess, and worked for the Spanish Crown. Therefore I think we should include foods from the middle ages, and because he spent most of his time discussing maps, astrolabes, mathematics, and astronomy with Jewish cartographers, we should also include their cooking recipes too.

Foods Columbus carried on his first voyage.

On the first voyage carried water, vinegar, wine, olive oil, molasses, cheese, honey, raisins, garlic, almonds, hardtack (sea biscuits), dry beans, salted sardines, anchovies, salt cod and pickled meats and salted flour. Fresh fish caught by the sailors supplemented this heavily salted pantry.

Here is a Spanish meal that you can easily make in a flash with your family using pre-packaged foods from your grocery store:

Fabada Asturiana

1- Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a skillet. 2- Add Linguica cut in slices, and ham cut in cubes. 3- Add rinsed  beans and 1 Cup of broth.”Cover and simmer for 15 munutes.  [Optional: add kayle]
